Omaha Hi-Low: Fundamental Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of players often get confused. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in nearly every poker game.
The low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
Although it seems complex at first, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an exciting range of betting options and seeing that you have several individuals battling for the high hand, along with several battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
