Omaha Hi/Low: Fundamental Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem difficult at first, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of the game with ease.
